Amazon-Ready Packaging for Dog Chews: Getting It Right at the Factory
FNSKU labels, suffocation warnings, carton marks and size tiers. Specifying these before production costs nothing; fixing them afterwards costs a prep centre.

Everything in this article can be handled at the factory for no extra cost, provided it is specified before production. Handled afterwards, each item becomes a prep-centre line charge, a chargeback, or a shipment sitting at a fulfilment centre.
The pattern is always the same: it is a specification problem, not a manufacturing one.
The four things to specify
FNSKU labels
Amazon identifies your inventory by FNSKU. The label can be printed and applied during packing at the factory — you send the label file, we apply it to each unit as it is packed.
Applied afterwards, someone has to open every carton, label every unit, and repack. That is what a prep centre charges per unit for.
Send the file at quotation stage, not after production. Relabelling a finished order is slow and entirely avoidable.
Suffocation warnings
Any unit packed in a poly bag above a certain size needs a suffocation warning, either printed on the bag or applied as a label. The threshold and wording are set by Amazon and are checked.
This is a good moment to ask whether you want a poly bag at all. For a natural, plastic-free product it is a slightly awkward look, and a kraft sleeve or a box often solves the requirement by removing it.
Carton marks
Shipments to a fulfilment centre need box ID labels and must respect weight and dimension limits. Cartons that exceed them are refused or surcharged.
Give your supplier the shipment plan and they can pack to it. Give them nothing and they will pack to whatever is efficient for them, which is not the same thing.
Size tiers
This is the one that quietly costs the most money.
Amazon's fulfilment fees step at defined package dimensions. A package that is a few millimetres over a boundary pays the next tier's fee on every single unit you ever sell. Over a year that difference dwarfs anything you saved on the product.
Check your packaging dimensions against the size tiers before production. If you are close to a boundary, a slightly smaller box or a different inner arrangement can move you down a tier — and that is a change that costs nothing at the design stage and is impossible after 5,000 boxes are printed.
Bundles: the other half of the margin problem
A single dog chew is a good traffic product and a poor profit one. Once you subtract the referral fee, the fulfilment fee and your advertising cost, a low-priced single item often nets close to nothing.
A combo or gift box changes the arithmetic. The fulfilment fee does not scale linearly with value, so a higher-priced multi-item SKU carries its fees far more comfortably. Most sellers who do well in this category run both: the single stick wins the click, the box pays for the business.
Practically, that means asking your supplier for a mixed box early rather than treating it as a phase-two idea. If they can combine materials — coffee wood with coconut fiber, say — you get a differentiated SKU that is hard to price-compare against.
The quality issue behind bad reviews
Natural products vary. Colour, grain and exact dimensions differ between pieces, because they differ between trees.
Two things follow:
Control what can be controlled. Moisture, size accuracy within the band, surface finish and count are all manufacturing variables and should be inspected. Ask your supplier at which stages they check.
Set expectations in the listing. A customer who expects uniform, identical products and receives natural variation leaves a one-star review about it. A customer who was told each piece is different does not. This is free to fix and almost nobody does it.
