A Second Life for Wood That Would Otherwise Be Burned.

Coffee trees from Gia Lai and Đắk Lắk at the end of their productive life, and work for the communities that farm them.

지속가능한 조달

A coffee tree produces well for twenty to twenty-five years. After that a farm replants, and the old trees come out. Historically that wood was burned or sold as firewood. Buying it gives the farm a second revenue event from the same tree and gives us a raw material that did not require anyone to plant anything for our sake.

Sourcing is concentrated in Gia Lai and Đắk Lắk. We can tell you the province and the season a batch came from. We cannot tell you the individual farm, and we would rather say so than imply a level of traceability we do not have.

The processing work — sorting, cutting, sanding, packing — happens in those same provinces, including in communities where formal employment is scarce. That is a real effect of running production near the material rather than near the port.

None of this makes the product carbon-neutral and we are not going to claim it does. It makes it a use for a by-product, made close to where the by-product occurs, shipped by sea like everything else.
