How Much Does Private Label Pet Chew Packaging Actually Cost

A breakdown of what drives private label packaging cost — box printing, hang tags, barcodes and MOQ — so a new brand can budget before requesting a quote.

Most first-time buyers ask a supplier for "a packaging quote" and get back a number that means almost nothing, because packaging cost is not one line — it is five or six decisions stacked on top of each other, each with its own MOQ and lead time. Knowing what those decisions are before the first call makes the quote comparable across suppliers instead of just a number to react to.

The five things that actually move the price

Print method. A stock kraft box with a single-colour stamp is cheap and fast because it uses existing tooling. Full-colour offset printing on a custom dieline needs plates cut for your artwork specifically — a real cost that only amortizes over a large enough run. Digital printing sits between the two: no plate cost, higher per-unit price, and the only sane option below a few thousand units.

Structural packaging vs. printed sleeve. A printed sleeve or hang tag wrapped around a stock box is the fastest, lowest-MOQ way to brand a product. A fully custom box shape — a window, an insert, a specific fold — adds tooling cost and lead time on top of printing, because the dieline itself has to be engineered and sampled before production starts.

Barcode and compliance labels. A GS1 barcode, country-of-origin mark and any destination-specific warning label (choking hazard language, for instance) are usually small individually but add up across a full range, and get missed most often when a buyer designs artwork before checking what their target market legally requires on the box.

Hang tag vs. laser engraving. Laser engraving directly onto a coffee wood chew is a one-time tooling cost per design, then a marginal cost per piece that is often lower than printing and applying a hang tag — but it only works on the product itself, not on toys without a hard surface to mark.

Minimum order quantity on the packaging, not the product. This is where budgets go wrong most often. A product MOQ of 50 pieces means nothing if the printer's minimum for your custom box is 2,000. Ask for the packaging MOQ separately from the product MOQ before you commit to a design.

A rough way to budget before you have a quote

For a first order in the low hundreds to low thousands of units, a printed sleeve or hang tag with a stock box and a single-colour barcode label is the realistic starting point — full custom tooling rarely pencils out until volume climbs past that. Low-MOQ sourcing covers how to structure that first order more broadly.

What to send a supplier to get a real number

A rough SKU count, a target unit count per SKU, and whether branding is a hang tag, a sleeve, or engraving. That is enough for a supplier to quote against instead of guessing at your intent. Request a quote with those three numbers and expect a packaging cost broken into printing, structure and labels — not one bundled figure.
