What Not to Print on a Dog Chew Pack: Health, Dental, Caffeine-Free and Green Claims in 2026

Claims not to print on a private-label dog chew pack in 2026: health, dental, organic, caffeine-free and green claims, and what to say instead.

By WINVN · · 5 min read

A supplier that prints whatever wording you send is not doing you a favour. The liability for what is on a pack sits with the brand whose name is on it. A pulled listing, a competitor's legal letter or a regulator's question costs far more than the print run. WINVN declines certain wording on every private-label order, whatever the size, and this article explains why.

Short answer: do not print disease or dental claims, "organic" without certification, "caffeine-free" without a laboratory report, absolute safety wording such as "splinter-free" or "100% safe", generic green claims such as "eco-friendly", or invented reviews. Print verifiable descriptions instead, plus the standard supervision guidance for hard chews.

Claims WINVN will not print

"Prevents", "treats" or "cures" anything

Article 13(3)(a) of Regulation (EC) No 767/2009 on the marketing of feed prohibits claims that a feed prevents, treats or cures a disease. It is a prohibition, not an evidence threshold. A dog chew in the EU is subject to feed labelling rules because feed is defined by intended use, not by the customs code the goods entered under.

Dental and tartar claims

A functional claim such as "cleans teeth" or "reduces tartar" must be objective, verifiable and backed by scientific substantiation available when the claim is made. Recognised dental claims in the pet trade are typically supported by controlled trials such as those reviewed by the Veterinary Oral Health Council. No such trial exists for coffee wood, so no dental claim goes on the pack.

"Organic" or "Bio"

These terms are protected under Regulation (EU) 2018/848. Using them without certification is an offence in itself, however natural the material is.

"Caffeine-free"

WINVN holds no laboratory assay of coffee trunk wood. Published plant research places caffeine mainly in the leaves and developing bean, but that is not a test of this material. Until a report with a laboratory's name on it exists, the claim does not go on a pack. See does coffee wood contain caffeine?

Absolute safety wording

"Does not splinter", "splinter-free", "100% safe", "the safest chew". No supplier can promise a hard chew is safe for every dog, and there is no standardised test behind those phrases. FEDIAF notes there is currently no specific legal standard for chew hardness.

Generic environmental claims

"Eco-friendly", "green", "sustainable", "climate-neutral", "biodegradable" without specifics. Directive (EU) 2024/825 on empowering consumers for the green transition applies from 27 September 2026. Under it, a generic environmental claim is banned unless the trader can show recognised excellent environmental performance, for example through the EU Ecolabel or an officially recognised EN ISO 14024 Type I label, or the claim is specified clearly on the same medium. There is no life-cycle assessment and no biodegradation test for coffee wood chews, so WINVN publishes no carbon figure, no compost timescale and no breakdown rate, and will not print one for you.

Invented reviews or testimonials

In the United States, the FTC's rule on consumer reviews and testimonials (16 CFR Part 465) has been in force since 2024 and carries civil penalties per violation. In the EU, unfair commercial practices rules cover fake reviews too.

What to print instead

Descriptions a buyer can verify by holding the product or reading a document. They read stronger anyway:

  • "One untreated plant material, nothing added."
  • "Moisture measured below 14% before packing."
  • "Cut from coffee trees over 20 years old, taken out at the end of their productive life."
  • "Paper and card, no plastic window, no laminate."
  • "Natural material: colour and grain vary from piece to piece."

And the safety guidance that belongs with every hard chew, attributed rather than asserted. FEDIAF's guidance on chews and treats for dogs points to three instructions:

  1. Choose a size that matches your dog's weight.
  2. Supervise your dog while it chews.
  3. Take the chew away once it is small enough to swallow.

Printing those three lines puts a pack ahead of most on the shelf.

Describe the packaging, do not label it

"Paper and card, no plastic window, no laminate" is a description a customer can check by holding the box. "Eco-friendly packaging" is a claim someone has to substantiate, and from 27 September 2026 in the EU that someone is the brand. WINVN's retail packaging is ivory board or unbleached kraft printed to your artwork, with charcoal desiccant sachets rather than silica gel. See the private-label packaging cost guide.

Amazon listings follow the same logic

A dental or health claim on a chew listing is a policy risk in every Amazon marketplace, on top of the legal risk. If a claim would not survive a request for evidence from a customer, a marketplace or a regulator, it should not be in the bullet points either.

Why a supplier should refuse

Several brands in this category print the claims above today. That is their statement. If you copy it, it becomes yours. A supplier that says no is protecting the brand that carries the liability, which is you.

Questions buyers ask

Can I say my coffee wood chew cleans teeth?

Not without scientific substantiation available when you publish the claim. No such trial exists for coffee wood, so WINVN will not print it.

Can I call the chew "eco-friendly" in the EU?

From 27 September 2026, generic environmental claims are banned unless backed by recognised excellent environmental performance or clearly specified on the same medium. Describe the material and packaging instead.

Will WINVN print my supervision warning and barcode?

Yes. Warning text, barcodes, FNSKU labels and carton marks are applied to your written specification, and you receive photos before the container is sealed.

Send your artwork for a quote and proof. We will flag any wording we cannot print before the proof, not after.
